If you want to work on social justice for everybody, regardless of who they are, then you will feel right at home in our chapter.
We became an official chapter of SOCM in 1999, initially sponsoring activities and workshops promoting unity and racial tolerance, encouraging participation in dismantling racism workshops, and addressing issues of discrimination in funding of public facilities.
Our chapter has worked hard to secure victories for our community. In 2009, as a result of our efforts, a proposed county wheel tax increase was successfully overturned. By being actively involved in SOCM’s Green Collar Jobs Initiative, we have strived to bring more green-collar jobs and training opportunities to our county. When historical flooding occurred in our region in 2010, our chapter responded by providing a stream of volunteers and donation collections to the relief efforts. Our efforts have succeeded in a $20 reduction in water/sewer rates for citizens, and we are continuing to fight to make sure this decrease continues.
We are dedicated to improving the quality of lives of the citizens of Maury County, and to ensuring social justice for people of all backgrounds. Our chapter is currently involved in several ongoing campaigns:
- Working for a positive solution to the political situation in Mt. Pleasant and improving governmental accountability
- Continuing work on water quality and lower sewer rates in Mt. Pleasant
- Fighting for equal access to jobs from the new companies entering the area
We hope you will join us for our monthly chapter meetings, every second Monday of the month at Christian Faith Church, 409 East 9th Street, Columbia, TN between 6:30 and 8:00 PM CT.
