SOCM is joining with the Metro Nashville Education Association (MNEA), Tennessee Education Report, Tennesseans Reclaiming Education Excellence (TREE), and other community allies to support the schools Nashville students deserve! Charter schools (privately operated, but publicly funded K-12 schools) are currently not held to the same standards as traditional public schools. This creates an unfair burden on our already strained students, educators, and communities.
Please sign the petition and send letters to the members of Nashville’s School Board to support holding charter schools to the same accountability and transparency standards that our traditional public schools operate under.
For more information, check out these results from a recent poll asking Nashvillians about their top education concerns.
Also see Public Accountability for Charter Schools: Standards and Policy Recommendations for Effective Oversight, the standards outlined by the Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University and mentioned in the petition below.
Here’s the text of the petition:
As parents, educators and community members, we believe all Nashville students deserve to have equitable access to excellent public schools. It is critical that the Metropolitan Board of Public Education supports our schools and provides the resources necessary for student success. We support the adoption of independent standards for accountability and transparency of all schools operating in Nashville’s public school system. We believe the standards outlined by the Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University should be adopted by the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to protect students and taxpayers.
