Green Collar Jobs Committee encourages citizen involvement in TVA’s IRP process

By Cathie Bird

Next Wednesday, June 18th, the Tennessee Valley Authority has scheduled a quarterly meeting to update the public on development of its 2015 Integrated Resource Plan. SOCM’s Green Collar Jobs (GCJ) Committee wants as many people as possible to get involved.

The Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) serves to identify the power generation strategies that TVA sees as most likely to lead the region and the nation toward a cleaner and more secure energy future.

Over the past few years, SOCM members and allies have strongly supported TVA’s ideas to rely more on energy efficiency and renewable energy sources and less on coal. But members have also challenged nuclear power projects like completion of the Bellefonte nuclear facility and protested TVA’s plan to retrofit the aging Gallatin coal plant.

The decisions TVA makes on development of power generation sources has far reaching consequences for economic, social and environmental justice in the region, including jobs and access to clean, affordable electricity for all citizens. That’s why the GCJ Committee follows developments at TVA.

“The IRP process is designed for public input,” says Lauren Bush, who chairs the GCJ Committee. “I would strongly encourage people to attend the webinar on the 18th.” [See the complete TVA notice at the end of this post for details!]

TVA’s public meeting and webinar on Wednesday are part of recent developments in this process.

“The TVA released an Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) in 2011,” Lauren said. “Normally it is done only every seven years but changes in demand for electricity, natural gas prices, and new regulations have warranted the process to be reopened.”
