Diane Ravitch to speak at Educating Nashville event

ravitch-posterMembers of SOCM’s Social Justice Committee were happy to learn this week that three Tennessee education advocacy groups will host Educating Nashville, an event to discuss the hoax of privatization and the future of education in Tennessee.

The groups, Tennesseans Reclaiming Educational Excellence (TREE), Tennessee BATs, and Momma Bears announced a special event featuring acclaimed historian, best-selling author, and former Assistant U.S. Secretary of Education Diane Ravitch.

The event, “Educating Nashville,” will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19, in Nashville. The venue will be announced via TREE’s Facebook pageon Monday, Nov. 17.

Dr. Ravitch will be introduced by local officials and will hold a question-and-answer session after her remarks regarding the hoax of education privatization. Following the program, attendees are encouraged to stay and meet with public education advocates from across the state.

Dylan Ross, who chairs SOCM’s Social Justice Committee, plans to be there, and hopes that other SOCM members will attend the event as well.

“It will be an opportunity to meet and connect with other Tennessee folks concerned with the issues Ravitch will be speaking about,” he said, “and her presentation will be a good roundup of information on privatization patterns and trends nationwide.”

Several committee members follow Ravitch’s blog because her posts on charter schools, vouchers, and other topics have offered excellent background information and resources for the committee’s work on education system issues in Tennessee.

The event is free.  Parents, teachers, elected officials, policymakers, and members of the media are encouraged to attend.  To RSVP, visit http://ravitchnashville.eventbrite.com.
