Cumberland County Chapter

If you want to preserve our Cumberland Mountains for future generations and connect with a great group of folks, then we invite you to join the Cumberland County Chapter of SOCM.

In 1998, after winning an issue establishing a recycling center, members petitioned our Board to start a chapter in Cumberland County.

Our chapter has won several major victories for the residents of Cumberland County. We helped to stop the expansion of the Cumberland Coal Company’s mine on Smith Mountain. In 2008, after four years of organizing, the chapter pushed to convince the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) to revise its plans around the routing and widening of Highway 127 North. The proposed rerouting and widening would have diverted traffic away from local businesses and through farm and forestland.

Our chapter takes on community challenges that threaten our communities. We have continued our tradition of taking action against threats to our community. We are involved in several campaigns, including:
