In 2008, our chapter became the first SOCM chapter in the West Tennessee area. Our history can be traced back to an organization called JONAH, a Jackson community group that mirrored SOCM’s efforts for justice.
Our chapter is composed of strong, committed individuals working to make Jackson a better community through anti-crime work, community development, and coalition building. If you’re ready to work for justice in the Jackson area, then we invite you to join our Jackson Chapter.
Our chapter works directly with the community to enact change. One of our chapter’s highlights is its annual event, Save Our Community Day, which was established in 2008. The event was so successful that Jackson’s Mayor declared the first Saturday in October as Save Our Community Day. It brings hundreds of Jackson and Madison County residents together to discover ways in which to improve our community
We have worked hard to register voters in our community, such as when we partnered with 96 KIX, a local radio station to provide bi-weekly voter registration block party. Our members have tried to address problems of crime and drug use by connecting with the city’s youth; members of the Youth and Jobs Committee works to develop new ways to provide teens with more job opportunities.
Our chapter continues to work on several problems in the Jackson area:
- Planning and execution of our annual Save Our Community Day
- Anti-crime work
- Finding ways to provide more jobs for teens
- Encouraging voter registration and citizen participation in the political process
- Continuing work on East Jackson redevelopment
We hope you will join us for our monthly chapter meetings, every second Thursday of the month at the Westwood Garden Center, Westwood Garden Drive, Jackson, TN, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM CT.
